Heading to Arsenal? Riyad Mahrez leaves Algeria squad to compete Deadline Day transfer
Thursday, August 31, 2017
Arsenal and Barcelona target Riyad Mahrez has left the Algeria training camp in order to 'formalise his transfer to his new club'.
The winger was instrumental in Leicester's charge to the 2015/16 title and has been coveted by a long list of clubs ever since.
Leicester, however, have so far managed to hold onto him despite interest from Arsenal, Barca and most recently Roma.
It appeared as though the Italian club ended their interest in Mahrez after insisting their transfer dealings for the summer are now over.
So it is unclear what his next move will be after his national federation let the cat out of the bag in regards to a deadline day move.
Arsenal have been strongly linked with Mahrez while Barca had considered him as a back-up option should they fail in their bid to land Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool.
A statement on the Algeria Football Association's website, read: "Leicester City's Algerian international Riyad Mahrez, who is currently with the national team in Sidi Moussa to prepare for the double confrontation against Zambia for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, was authorised by the national coach Lucas Alcaraz and the Algerian Football Federation to make an express trip to Europe to formalise on Thursday his transfer to his new club
"The national team will fly without him on Thursday morning to Lusaka to face Zambia on Saturday."
