David Beckham and his dream of owning a team in MLS moved a step closer to reality with league commissioner Don Garber confident of announcing the expansion team in the coming weeks.
Former England, Manchester United and Real Madrid star Beckham met with MLS owners in Chicago, where a vote on Wednesday authorised Garber to move forward in finalising Miami's entrance to the league in 2020.
Miami-Dade County commissioners granted permission to ex-LA Galaxy captain Beckham and his ownership group - Miami Beckham United - to secure three acres of county-owned land for a new 25,000-seat soccer stadium in June.
Now Garber said he is close to confirming Miami's MLS status, possibly as soon as September.
"We're not announcing MLS Miami today," Garber said before the clash between the MLS All-Stars and Real Madrid. "But I am confident that we'll be able to do that sometime, perhaps by the end of the summer. We do have some things that we need to work through."
Garber included: "David and his [partner] Todd Boehy introduced their arrangement and vision, including their musings about a stadium for a MLS development group in Miami.
"Their arrangement was extremely generally welcomed by our proprietors. It was the first run through David had formally met with our proprietors and it was the first run through our proprietors had a chance to meet with Todd.
"There was a vote that approved me and alongside an advisory group of proprietors to settle the subtle elements as for that arrangement. We trust the time is correct, at long last, for Miami to end up noticeably an extraordinary Major League Soccer city.
The quick subsequent stages are for me and Mark Abbott to work with Todd, will's identity the lion's share proprietor of the group alongside David and their accomplices. We will work with them to finish the subtle elements of their development design with the end goal for us to authoritatively close on this Miami group.
"As we as a whole know, Miami is one of the biggest markets in North America. It's a group that is unbelievably different and is enthusiastic about the amusement.
"David has been investing a lot of energy in the course of recent years specifically, all things considered five to six years preceding that with his accomplice Simon Fuller to attempt and settle this arrangement. They have conferred a tremendous measure of time and assets and everything truly is set up for us to do what we have to do throughout the following couple of weeks, maybe 30 days to push ahead
